Which Gaming Console suits me best?

Which console suits me best? This is a question that almost everyone asks themselves before purchasing a console. Unfortunately I can’t give you the answer, but I can try to help you out as much as possible by comparing the top 3 classic consoles for you. The pioneers are the PlayStation 5 from Sony, the Nintendo Switch from Nintendo and the X-Box Series X from Microsoft. With the Steam Deck we are also looking at the new exotic among the consoles. Each console differs in technical characteristics and in applicability. This guide is designed to help you decide which console to buy. Are you more of a party gamer or do you place more value on graphics and performance?

PlayStation 5

Sony has experimented more in terms of design with its flagship PlayStation 5 than with its predecessor. Compared to the PlayStation 4, the design of the PlayStation 5 is very futuristic. For those who are less interested in the design, here is a brief overview of the technical details. The CPU is a Zen 2 processor with 3.5 GHz and 8 cores from AMD. The graphics processor achieves 10.30 teraflops and has 36 computing units at 2.23 GHz. With 16GB GDDR6/256bit RAM, the machine is pretty fast. The PlayStation 5 has 885GB of SSD hard drive storage, of which unfortunately only 667GB can be used. The memory can still be expanded thanks to an extra SSD slot. A 4K UHD Blu-Ray drive is installed. On the PS5 you can play some games in 120 fps. If you don’t feel like storing your games in physical form and prefer to stream media, the Digital Edition will probably appeal to you. The console does not have a drive and therefore games can only be purchased digitally. The PlayStation 5 is the only console on which you can play with a VR headset thanks to the PlayStation VR(2).

X Box Series X

Microsoft, on the other hand, delivers a literal block in terms of design with the X-Box Series X. The block, which calls for desktop PC design, can do more than meets the eye, however. The X-Box is equipped with an eight-core CPU with 3.8 GHz each (Custom Zen 2). The graphics processor achieves 12 teraflops and has 52 computing units (Custom RDNA 2). The X-Box does not surpass the PlayStation 5 in terms of RAM, since both share the 16GB GDDR6 RAM. The hard drive is a 1TB Custom NVME SSD, which should load the operating system and all games super fast. You can also expand the storage with a 1TB expansion card. A 4K UHD Blu Ray drive is also installed here. The X-Box is capable of displaying some games at 120 fps. As an X-Box (and PC) player you can get a pass via PC or X-Box for a small sum that you pay monthly. This pass, also known as the game pass, has hundreds of well-known games. So if you don’t feel like buying new games for a lot of money, you should consider getting the game pass. The X-Box also has an edition that is technically less powerful, but also €200 cheaper. This is the X-Box Series S, you can use the commission link to find out more about the technology installed.

Another plus point for the X-Box is of course the Game Pass, which is often available for one euro.

Exclusives for the X-Box are:

All Halo titles
All Forza titles
Microsoft Flight Simulator

The LastNight

Nintendo switch

The Nintendo Switch is a multi-talent. It can be used as a handheld and as a console, which means you can simply take it with you and connect it anywhere. On the go, you can disassemble the controller and dock it to the console itself. So you get a kind of Gameboy Advance. You have to distinguish between the classic and the OLED switch, which has a larger display and more storage space. The CPU is both the modified Nvidia Tegra X1 processor with 1020 MHz. The GPU speed is 307.2 MHz in handheld mode and 307.2 / 768 MHz in docking mode. The classic switch has 32 GB of hard disk space, of which only about 26 GB are available. The OLED switch has 64 GB of hard disk space, of which only 48 GB are available.

Steamdeck

The Steam Deck is a little newer as a handheld desktop. The device was developed by Steam and can be pre-ordered, so it will be available from October. You can connect the Steam Deck to a monitor similar to the Nintendo Switch. It runs on the SteamOS which is based on Linux and can access and play many games from its Steam library. The CPU is the AMD APU Zen 2 with 2.4 – 3.5 Ghz. The GPU has 2 computing units and 1.6 TFlops. 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM are installed. There are three versions of the Steam Deck, differing only in memory. One version has 64 GB eMMC and the other two each have 256 GB NVMe SSD and 512 high-speed NVMe SSD, which enables fast loading times. The versions differ in price, the smallest version costs €419 and the largest €679.

Exclusives

The problem with consoles is that some games are only released exclusively for that console. These games are called exclusives. Super Smash Bros. is only available for the Nintendo Switch, while the Halo parts are only available for the X-Box. On the PlayStation you can find more Japanese exclusives similar to Nintendo. It is important to know which games you like to play and whether they are available for the console when making a decision. The Steamdeck, on the other hand, accesses your Steam library, which means that you may already have a large number of games at the start. I’ve put a few exclusive titles under the various consoles for you. The best thing to do before you buy it is to research whether your favorite games are available for that console.

Which console suits me best?

You can really only answer that question yourself. If you place more value on the performance of a console, you are more likely to buy an X-Box or PlayStation. If you’re a big Super Mario fan and like to play on the go, buy a Switch. In the end you have to know for yourself which games you like to play the most. With the switch, the party factor is probably the best, you bring a handy console and can play with up to eight people.

For the typical gamer, the X-Box or the PlayStation would be something. Both consoles offer solid technology, which can even be expanded with external hard drives. The SSD hard drives ensure super-fast loading times. If you like playing big games, you should rather get one of the two consoles.

With X-Box and PlayStation there are only minimal technical differences and accordingly the exclusive titles make the biggest difference there. Ray tracing is possible with some games on the X-Box and PlayStation. VR is currently mainly a feature of the PS5.

The X-Box scores among other things with the Game Pass as a gaming subscription. You pay a small sum monthly and can therefore play all the games that are included there. Because Microsoft has taken over many well-known studios in recent years, the game pass is constantly expanding.

The Switch, on the other hand, is stronger in the Exclusives. With new AAA titles, which appear across platforms, the console cannot keep up with its technology. There are classics like Pokémon, Super Mario and Animal Crossing.

If you are interested in a power handheld and like to play your PC games on the go, you should take a closer look at the Steam Deck. The Linux-based OS is aimed at PC gamers. You can access your Steam library and play most games on the go or connected to the monitor.

Another important difference is the controllers. Every gamer has a subjective favorite when it comes to controllers, some say the PlayStation controllers are unbeatable, others say the X-Box controllers are unbeatable. While the X-Box has stayed very true to its design, Sony has made some major changes. The best thing to do is go to your local trusted tech store and try them both out there.
